I was gifted a physical ARC of Honey Trap (The Guild #1) by Tate for Christmas, and the woman knows how to give a gift! Let’s dive right in with this review! This post WILL contain spoilers! Be warned.

Let me start by acknowledging that I know I always say this. I know. It’s a problem. But it’s always true. This is the single best book Tate has ever written. There, I said it.

These characters were simply amazing. Well developed, flawed, dynamic, and just so much fun to read about. We have Leon, our nerdy badass, who’s a dreamboat with a dark past I would love to know more about. He’s deliciously complicated and hiding stuff we could only ever dream of. Then we have Danny, our badass female. She kicks ass, has so much confidence I could cry, and generally just makes me want to be like her when I grow up. She’s amazing and might be tied with Hades for my favorite Tate FMC. Yes, that’s right, she’s ALREADY tied with Hades…

Kai, oh Kai. You mysterious little arms dealer, you. I need to know more about this hot, dangerous, possessive af man. He was so much fun. And finally, Stanley. I want to have Stanley’s hybrid plant babies. He knows how to treat a woman. If you know, you know.

This plot line is obviously still in line with the previous Shadow Grove world, and it’s the Guild, so shit’s going down. But they’ve been soooo secretive with the Guild in previous books, it was amazing to get to see beneath and get a peek at what they really do and how they operate. Throw in a little kidnapping and a little Stockholm syndrome….what could go wrong!

Holy hell, speaking of Stockholm syndrome, and it’s not really SS, it’s just Danny knowing what Danny wants and if that’s the arms dealer that kidnapped her then hey, more power to her. These scenes are hot as fuck. Kai and Danny burn it up, and the tension between Leon and Danny is almost just as scorching.

As far as worldbuilding, not a whole lot needed to be done, as we’re back in Shadow Grove for a bit. We get a little cameo from our favorite angsty/murderous child, and see some familiar faces! Kai’s island and his whole world was built up nicely, and I’m sure we’ll see more of it coming soon too.

Tate took mercy on our poor souls, and this cliffy, while still obviously prevalent, at least didn’t rip our hearts out of our chests and then stomp on them. It sucks, of course, because Tate wrote it and she likes being mean to us, but it’s bearable.

All in all, FANTASTIC book and I can’t wait for the next one! The Guild spin-off series is currently set for 3 books, but knowing Tate, that could very well change.

Book Info

Honey Trap (The Guild #1) by Tate James

Release Date: December 27th, 2021

honeytrap – noun. a stratagem in which an attractive person entices another person into revealing information or doing something unwise.

Those who have reached a certain level within the mercenary guild, know that it’s not merely a job. It isn’t a hobby or a career or a fun pastime. It’s a calling. A fucking honor.

Being in the Guild is our life…. Or death. Not everyone is created equal, and not everyone is truly cut out for the work we do. It’s not pretty, it’s not glamorous, and it’s sure as shit not moral or good. The weight of the sins we carry can become too much for some, and they crack.

When they do, they become a threat. No one quits the Guild. Not really. Either they cut a deal to make themselves useful in another capacity, or they get eliminated.

But who, you might ask, can kill a killer? Who scares the boogeyman into running and hiding? Men like me.

The Guild is my life. My love. My very existence. Anyone who poses a threat to that, is eliminated. No questions, no hesitations, no mercy. Until her.
